About Axis Football League

Axis Football League is an American football game from Axis Games. It was first released as a Flash game in July 2010, and the version here runs the original file through the Ruffle emulator, so it plays in a modern browser without any plugin. Unlike arcade football games that only let you throw, this one gives you a real playbook, full kickoffs and punts, and control of the ball carrier after the snap.

Controls

• W, A, S, D move the player you are controlling.
• Left mouse click switches to another player. On a pass play, the receiver who catches the ball becomes yours to run with.
• Space bar kicks. Kickoffs, punts and field goals use a power meter, so the timing of the press decides how far the ball travels.

Before each down you pick a formation and a play. On offence you start as the quarterback and decide whether to hand off and run or drop back and throw to one of your targets.

Teams, playbook and season

The league is made up of city teams: Arizona, Baltimore, Carolina, Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, New England, New Orleans, New York, Oakland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Francisco, plus an AFL All-Stars side. Each roster is filled with named players at every position, from linemen and linebackers to cornerbacks and safeties, and teams differ in how good they are at passing, rushing and blocking.

The playbook is detailed for a browser game. There are shotgun calls such as Flood Weak, Fly Away, Overload and Slot Shuffle Pass, single-back plays like Tail Iso, Weak Sweep and Zone Breaker, and goal-line sets including Max Protect. Special teams include onside kicks as well as normal kickoffs and punts.

In Season mode you pick a team and play through the schedule week by week while the game keeps season stats such as passing yards, passing touchdowns and interceptions. A good record sends you into the playoffs, which run through a quarterfinal and semifinal to the Championship Game, with an AFL Champions screen for the winner. You can keep separate seasons in three save slots, and each one remembers its difficulty: Rookie, Pro, All Star or Hall of Fame.

Tips

• Start on Rookie while you learn the pass timing, then step up a level once you can move the ball consistently.
• Pick a team whose strength fits how you like to play. A strong passing team suits shotgun calls, while a good blocking line makes the run plays work.
• Switch to the receiver as soon as the ball is caught and turn upfield; standing still after the catch invites a tackle.
• Watch the kick meter instead of tapping Space at once. A rushed press is the usual cause of short punts and missed field goals.
